The 2nd grade celebrated Stuffed Animal Day by dressing in pajamas and bringing their favorite stuffed animal to school. We graphed gummy bears and made rolls that looked like our stuffed animal. It was a super fun day!

Underground Railroad

The 5th graders at Orchard Hills participated in a simulation of the Underground Railroad in May.  Conductors took the students from station to station until they reach safety in Canada.  The students snuck quietly through the halls of the school trying not to get caught and sent back.  At each safe house there were station masters who taught the students more about the Underground Railroad and did an activity with the students.  It was a fun and educational activity that hopefully helped students learn and understand more about our country's history.

Teacher of the Year: Sharilee McMullin

Submitted by adrian.rowley on

Sharilee McMullin exemplifies what a great teacher is all about.  She has high expectations of herself and from the students in class.  They know she expects them to do their best; and, consequently, they perform to the level of expectation.  She knows that not all students are at the same level.  She goes to great lengths to assess and determine the level of each student and helps assure student progress from their individual level of ability.  She is exceptionally kind and considerate of students, parents, and staff.

We have reviewed and practiced these steps at school, but we hope that you will also review and reinforce them at home.

The kindergartners at Orchard Hills Elementary had a fabulous time on their field trip.  They went to the Scera Theater in Orem and saw the play Tremendously Tall Tales.  After the play they were able to eat and play at the park.  Then they enjoyed learning about and looking at animals at the Bean Museum at BYU.

Sixth-Grade Field Trip

A part of the sixth-grade curriculum is learning about astronomy.  Sixth-grade students at Orchard Hills went to the BYU Planetarium to learn more about our universe.  The field trip was a great culminating activity to reinforce what was learned in class. Plus it is lots of fun.  The sixth-grade teachers hope a love of astronomy and learning will be part of their students' future.  They finished off a great day by going classic skating.

Temples and Tombs

Orchard Hills 6th graders performed "Tales of Temples and Tombs" for students and parents.  This program has become an annual production here at Orchard Hills.  Students participated by performing songs, a dance, and role playing the parts of mummies and pharaohs.  Mr. Barlow played the role of King Tut and entered the gym riding on a chariot adorned with his riches (fishing pole and net).  It was a great time in the land of Egypt.  Everyone loved it!
