Since Utah history is part of the fourth-grade curriculum, we took a field trip to the state capitol in late November. Here are some fun facts our fabulous fourth graders learned while touring the stunning building: all 50 state capitols have a life-size replica of the liberty bell; the interior is made with Georgia marble; much of the capitol is designed with intricate art work depicting the early life of pioneer settlers; and the governor's desk is made from the trees of maple, linden, and Japanese pagodas that were destroyed in the 1999 tornado that struck SLC.
Last night, fifth grade had their DARE graduation! DARE is a program offered to all 5th grade students at Orchard Hills. It is taught by Officer Bell from the Santaquin Police Dept., and is designed to teach students about making safe and responsible choices, being kind to others, being good citizens in their community, and the risks involved with underage drinking and drug use. The point of DARE is to provide these students with appropriate knowledge to make educated & well-thought-out decisions when in the future they are confronted with drugs and alcohol, and other risky decisions.
Our 2nd grade classes are learning about different cultures and countries this month.
We enjoyed a wonderful presentation by our friend, Mrs. Esquerra about her Native American tribe from Arizona. Her tribe is known for their expert basket weaving. She also told us some folktales and showed us some musical instruments that she found at a Pow Wow.
Ms. Winward, one of our fabulous 5th grade teachers taught us about Ghana, Africa. Did you know people go swimming to celebrate Christmas? They also wrap lights around palm trees to make Christmas trees.
